Lush Lawns
A beautiful lush lawn makes your home the perfect environment for outdoor family picnics, parties, and a safe space for the kids to play and enjoy backyard activities. To keep your lawn looking plush and green, you will need some regular maintenance to keep it under control. Aeration and fertilizing are important parts to keeping a healthy lawn. Aeration should be done at least once a year in spring and fertilization should be a minimum of twice a year, spring and fall. Ideally, your lawn should be fertilized four times a year.
For a healthy, vibrant plush looking lawn, focus on spring preparation, including soil testing, aeration, and proper watering, while also addressing weeds and mowing techniques. A healthy lawn resists invasion by moss, weeds, insects and diseases. If your lawn is not meeting your expectations, consider a lawn renovation.
Here are the four main steps to a healthy lawn
1.) Feed Regulary: Within as little as 6-8 weeks, your soil has processed most of the nutrients for your lawn to absorb. Regular replacement of these nutrients will help the lawn grow thicker and greener.
2.) Mow High: If yoy cut your grass to short, especially in the heat of summer, you are short-changing your lawn. Longer grass grows longer roots, which can reach down for more moisture even on hot days. Leave the clippings so the lawn can recycle nutrients.
3.) Water Deep: If your grass is cut short, you will need to water more frenquently than if your grass is longer. However, even longer grass needs moisture. So be sure to water deeply and infrequently for best root developement. A good rule of thumb is about an inch of water a week during the hot summer. Be sure to water in the morning between 6 am and 10 am, to reduce evaporation.
4.) Reseeding Lawn: The best time to reseed lawns is in the fall or early spring for northern regions, or spring to early summer for the south when conditions are optimal for grass growth. Adding clover to your existing lawn is a great way to create a green, low maintenance lawn that doesn't need a lot of water. Planting grass seed in Pennsylvania.
5.) Fall Lawn Maintenance: Lawn looking a little yellow, patchy, and thin in the fall? This could be from a Magnesium deficiency. Here is a simple solution that will spark some new life into your lawn this fall. Mix (1-tablespoon) of Epson salts with (1-gallon) of water. Spray on damaged parts, or the whole lawn. Apply in early October for best results. If a second treatment is necessary, you can apply late as early November. (30 days from first application). This will help rectify any nutrien deficiencies in the soil, ensuring the grass remains healthy even as temperatures drop.
6.) Fall Lawn Mowing: We all know that mowing in the summer months is part of regular lawn maintenance, but mowing if the fall is even more important. Your lawn is still growing quickly in the fall because of the mild temperatures. It is not being stressed out by the hot summer. Mowing your lawn twice per week in the fall can help thicken your lawn and control weeds. The ideal height to mow your lawn in fall for winter preparation is between 2 and 3 inches. This keeps the grass short enough to resist disease, but not so short that it becomes overly stressed by cold temperatures. Continue to mow at that height for as long as the grass is actively growing. KEEP ON MOWING!
